INFO-H-414 : Swarm Intelligence

Lecturers

Objective

To let students have a basic understanding of swarm intelligence principles

Contents

Swarm intelligence is the discipline that deals with natural and artificial systems composed of many individuals that coordinate using decentralized control and self-organization. In particular, the discipline focuses on the collective behaviors that result from the local interactions of the individuals with each other and with their environment. Examples of systems studied by swarm intelligence are colonies of ants and termites, schools of fish, flocks of birds, herds of land animals. Some human artifacts also fall into the domain of swarm intelligence, notably some multi-robot systems, and also certain computer programs that are written to tackle optimization and data analysis problems. The course will present a number of swarm intelligence systems and will give the opportunity to experiment with them.

Project guidelines

Project A assignments

The exam will take place:

Tuesday 9 of June at IRIDIA Lab, starting from 09:00 am.

The following list provides the approximate time you will be called for the exam, please make sure you are at Iridia at least 5 minutes before your assigned time.

Exam list

At the exam you will present the results of your project using a powerpoint-like presentation of exactly 7 minutes. Please bring your own portable computer. The rest of the exam will consist of a question answering session on all the subjects covered by the course.

The deadline to deliver the project is June 2nd, please follow the instructions provided in class. Please remind that there are 2 points of penalty for each day of delay in the submission of the project (this means, 2 points lost if you deliver after the deadline and until 24h delay, and so on). No exceptions.

The second exam session is scheduled for: September 4

There will be a new project available on July 10, the deadline of it will be August 21.
